Soaring the Solstice

June 23, 2018

The shortest Saturday of 2018 will occur on June 23 rd , and we’ve decided that this is a great
opportunity to have a social flying day and remind ourselves that the GCV gliding activities in Benalla
aren’t limited to the summer months.

We’ll pull the club gliders out of the hangar, DI and tow them out to the launch point,
and then proceed to clock up as many flying hours as possible for the remainder of the shortest day
of the year.

To add to the general camaraderie and spirit of the day, pilots will be divided into teams and
compete for fun prizes such as the team having the highest cumulative flying time and the most
launches taken. We’ll also cook up some bacon and egg rolls on the at the State Gliding Centre for
breakfast, and fire up the club’s new launch point BBQ for lunch. If it’s chilly, we’ll also have a couple
of firing drums out at the launch point to help people keep warm.

For our new solo pilots, this is a great opportunity to keep your stick skills up and ensure you’re in a
good position to maximise the opportunities when the thermals arrive in a couple of months. For
more experienced pilots, you could always get your annual check out of the way, but if not, you can
just spend some time imparting your wisdom to those who are newer to the game!

Come on everyone – let’s all get out there and join in the fun of the newest social flying initiative at
the Gliding Club of Victoria!
