Logger, Badge Flying and Official Observer Course

August 15, 2015

Logger, Badge Flying and Official Observer Course

In preparation for the coming X/C season there will be a one-day session for all these topics on Saturday 15th August at Benalla.  The day will be relevant to members who will be attempting their first cross-country flights in the coming season, and to more experienced members wanting to expand or brush up on their knowledge of these topics.  I am also seeking to have a few more Official Observers in the club (there is some self-interest in this…) and so there will be some more detailed discussion of the requirements of the Sporting Code.

The aim is to:

1.  Improve understanding of modern technology in gliding, particularly focussed on loggers and electronic navigation equipment.  We will look at the club’s Nano 3 loggers, other similar devices, and Oudie and Kobo navigation instruments.
2.  Walk through the requirements in the Sporting Code particularly looking at early Badge flying (Silver and Gold) and how to plan and achieve these flights successfully.
3.  For those who have interest in becoming an Official Observer (and no, you don’t need 1000 hours gliding for this, any member can do it) I will go through the requirements of the Sporting Code, the Declaration and Claims process, and the procedure for appointment to the role.

As you can guess, there is quite a bit of overlap in these three topics and so it makes sense to cover them all in one day.  I also expect that many members whose main interest is in only one of these topics will gain from sitting in on the others.

Please let me know if you intend to come – tshirley@internode.on.net, or 0417 268 073.

Thanks.

Tim
